LEWISTON – Lewiston High School dropped, kicked and picked up a few splinters from the measuring stick Friday.

Unbeaten through the first half of their four-game homestand to open the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference season, the Blue Devils had a chance to jump into the ring with the perennially rugged Cony Rams.

That opportunity slipped through their fingers – and through the webbing of those pesky gloves in the form of eight errors – in a 15-2 loss at Upper Franklin Field.

“We didn’t play well defensively. We had come off two nice ballgames, and today we had a few leaks in the defense,” said Lewiston coach Fred Royer.

Lewiston (2-1) committed only one error in a 13-0 Monday blanking of Leavitt and no miscues in Wednesday’s 5-4 verdict over Edward Little.

This time around, the snowman on the scorecard matched Cony’s hit total, giving a disastrous amount of assistance to a team coming off a trip to the Eastern Class A championship game last spring.

After teetering on the edge for most of the afternoon, Lewiston watched the roof cave in with 10 Cony runs in the top of the seventh inning.

“We were sloppy at first, and our pitching wasn’t real accurate at first,” Cony coach Rocky Gaslin said.

Mika Wilson didn’t even see the field for Cony (3-0) until the bottom of the fifth inning, but the left-hander provided the exclamation point for the Rams with both her arm and her bat.

Wilson surrendered a single to Danielle Willey and later plunked Michelle Caron to put the tying run at the plate with two out in the sixth. Three pitches later, though, she coaxed Lyndsay Smith into a pop-up in foul territory, and Kayla Belanger made a lunging catch to get the Rams out of harm’s way.

For her encore in the top of the seventh, Wilson ripped a two-run double and chased home two more runs with a single. Cony ushered 14 batters to the plate in that frame.

“We’re deep in that respect. Everyone can play on the team at certain times. Sometimes they get in slumps, and we’re able to switch them around,” said Gaslin, adding that Cony also showcases a four-person pitching staff.

Cony’s other big inning was the third, when it scratched out four runs on the strength of two hits, two passed balls and three errors to break a 1-1 tie. Amy Jones’ triple was the key clout.

Willey, who pitched a two-hit shutout in Lewiston’s season-opener, was able to prevent more damage by stranding the bases loaded in the fourth and sixth. She also spun two 1-2-3 innings, including a rare three-pitch, three-out gem in the fifth.

“Some basic routine plays just didn’t go,” Royer said, “and they’re a good ballclub.”

Erica Morin singled and scored for Lewiston in the first inning. Carley Denis walked in the fifth and scored on a stolen base and two Cony throwing errors.
