LISBON – The first of two public hearings for comments and questions on the proposed $7,413,934 municipal budget and the $14,516,333 school budget will take place at 7 p.m. Monday, April 28, at the Lisbon Community School cafeteria on Mill Street.
Due to a longer town charter-required posting time frame, those who miss the first hearing will get a second chance to attend the final hearing at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 10, at the Community School, as the notice for the first hearing was not posted early enough to meet the charter.
The Town Council will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, May 12, at the town office, and, considering comments made at the hearings, will adopt the budgets.
Pursuant to Maine’s new school consolidation law, there will be a special “validation referendum” where residents will vote by secret ballot on Tuesday, May 20, whether or not to approve the school budget only, as adopted by the Council.
The municipal budget is not subject to a referendum vote.
If voters reject the school budget as approved by the Council, state law requires it to go back to the School Committee for reworking and the process would begin all over again and back to another referendum vote.
Copies of the budgets will be available at the hearings. For further information on the referendum election, call Town Clerk Twila Lycette, 353-3000, ext. 112.
