PORTLAND (AP) – The U.S. Senate has confirmed President Bush’s nomination of businessman Peter Cianchette of South Portland as ambassador to Costa Rica.

The announcement was made Tuesday by Sen. Olympia Snowe, who said Cianchette’s confirmation is a proud moment for Maine.

Snowe said his tenure in the Legislature and his extensive business background gives him a wealth of problem-solving experience that he brings to his new post.

Cianchette was the 2002 Republican nominee for governor and headed the Bush-Cheney campaign in Maine two years later.

As ambassador, he succeeds Texas businessman Mark Langdale, who held the post since 2005.
