LEWISTON – Cony High School is just getting started as a girls’ varsity lacrosse program. Lewiston, armed with eight seniors and a handful of past playoff appearances, is still learning how to finish.
The net result Wednesday was a substantial upset, on paper, with the Rams rallying from a three-goal deficit in the opening minutes to trip the previously undefeated Blue Devils, 4-3, in a Class A contest at Don Roux Field.
Andrea Dibello, Michelle Rancourt and Lysa Laverdiere each scored in the first six minutes, 15 seconds of the game for Lewiston (2-1). Forty-three minutes of frustration followed.
“We couldn’t hit the goal. I think we had five shots in a row that went to the right, and those were basically penalty shots,” said Lewiston coach Bill Grant. “It’s disappointing, but it’s most disappointing for girls because they know what they have for potential.”
Cony (2-1) has every reason to begin adjusting its own expectations. After a victory over Camden Hills in their initial varsity game, the Rams stood toe-to-toe with traditional Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference power Mt. Ararat throughout most of an 11-6 loss.
Now, this: An impressive win plucked from the jaws of what looked like a one-sided, windblown defeat in the early stages.
Paige Farrin scored two goals and Naomi Miller added another to bring the Rams even at the break. Cassie Diplock notched the game-winner with 18:31 remaining. All three Cony goal-scorers are sophomores.
“I’m ecstatic,” said Cony coach Gretchen Livingston. “Really we’re just playing on heart and athleticism right now. We weren’t sure about today. We knew it was definitely a possible win.”
Another sophomore, Julia Bush, made 15 saves in the Cony cage. Erika Adams, Alyssa Dufour and Jessica Brox led the disruptive defense.
“It definitely wasn’t the highest-scoring lacrosse game ever, but we played smart,” Livingston said. “We’re learning more about the game every day. We’ve been forcing it, and today, especially that second half, we didn’t force it.”
Stephanie Belanger made eight of her 11 saves in the first half for Lewiston.
Laverdiere and Amie Daniels added assists for the Blue Devils, who have as many as four potential KVAC all-stars on the roster, in Grant’s estimation. A showdown game next week against Brunswick will offer a chance to right the ship.
“Cony’s a good team. They did a lot of things right,” Grant said. “They played fundamentally sound. That’s why they were able to shut us down.”
