PORTLAND – Roland Wallace Boutin of Portland, died at Maine Medical Center on May 1, after a long illness.

He was born on March 10, 1926, in Lewiston, the eldest son of Cyrille Boutin and Yvonne Goulet Boutin.

He enlisted in the army during high school and served during World War II. He graduated from Lewiston High School in 1946. In 1951, he graduated with a degree in economics from the University of Maine at Orono.

The following year, he married Madeline Sansoucy. They met when he interviewed Maddie for a secretarial job at the Bates Mill. She didn’t get the job, but she got a proposal. In 1956, he and Maddie’s beloved only child, James, was born. Maddie died in 1978.

For most of his career, he worked for Employers Commercial Union Insurance Co. He was the regional manager for claims in the state of Maine and eventually moved on to manage claims for the company’s Orlando, Fla., office.

He was an active member of the Scarborough community, serving as president of the Rotary Club and on the town’s school board. He was also an avid skier and for a time was on the ski patrol. He loved good food, a good laugh and his Boston Red Sox. His second wife, Nancy Thibodeau Hews, predeceased him. He moved from Florida, back home to Maine, in 2002 to be closer to family.

He is survived by his son, James and daughter-in-law, Susan; his adored younger brother, Reggie, and Reggie’s wife, Mary, and their children; and three stepsons, Mark, Todd and Scott Hews.
