NEW GLOUCESTER – Police are investigating a possible acid bomb that was found in a New Gloucester mailbox Saturday morning.

A resident at 536 Bald Hill Road called 911 to report a suspicious package at 8:20 a.m., according to New Gloucester Fire Chief Gary Sacco. The Presumpscot Valley Hazmat Team got there about an hour later.

The item – which officials believe was an acid bomb – had already gone off inside the mailbox. The team collected and disposed of what remained.

The resident who found the item received minor burns to his hands, Sacco said.

He was not taken to the hospital and no one else was hurt.

The incident is now under investigation by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department.
