FARMINGTON – Special Olympians gathered Tuesday for a day of fun with competitions on the football field at Mt. Blue High School.

Jay AMVETS, with help from the VFW in Livermore Falls, 59 volunteers, 56 coaches and about 40 Mt. Blue National Honor Society students, worked with 125 athletes from Franklin County and Livermore Falls, said organizer Gerry Toothaker of Wilton.

Bright yellow T-shirts worn by participants and volunteers stood out against a backdrop of green grass and blue, sunny skies. Participants competed in archery, softball throw, 50-, 100- and 200-meter races, and wheelchair events, he said.

Some of the athletes may go on to the Special Olympics during the summer in Orono, but for this day, the goal was a day out and some fun, he said.

Officers from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department awarded ribbons to participants from area schools and nursing homes, he said.

Hamburgers and hot dogs sizzled on a grill in preparation for lunch served to participants by the Livermore Falls VFW.
