AUBURN – Michelle Prevost knew the drill. With runners on second and third and two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Mt. Ararat coach Doug Phinney told Prevost to put Edward Little’s No. 7 hitter, Kayla Cummings, on first.

“I had a really bad experience with an intentional walk against Brunswick where the girl hit a grand slam,” Prevost said. “I was just like, ‘OK, this can’t happen again.'”

It didn’t.

Four pitches later, Prevost sent EL second-baseman Miranda Martin swinging to preserve a 7-6 win for the Eagles over the Eddies at Tribou Field on Wednesday.

“Michelle pitched an awesome game,” Mt. Ararat coach Doug Phinney said. “The offense finally came through in the sixth inning, too. We made a couple of errors, they made a couple of errors, but overall, it was a good team effort.”

The Eddies started the bottom of the seventh trailing by three runs, but added a pair quickly on three singles and a fielding error by Mt. Ararat shortstop Miranda Riendeau. An out and that intentional walk later, Martin stood in with a chance to even the game.

“She was a freshman coming up into that spot,” EL coach Elaine Keene said. “She’s going to remember that, though. She’s a good player. She’s going to remember and make the adjustment next time around.”

The Eddies also left the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, one half inning after the Eagles did most of their damage.

Riendeau led off the inning with a walk. Kaylee Kowalczyk singled, and Tess Hitchcock walked behind her to load the bases with no outs. An infield hit and an error led to three Mt. Ararat runs, but it was a pair of doubles – one each from Sami Owen and Prevost – that ultimately beat the Eddies.

Prevost’s double came on the heels of three strikeouts, and ended up driving in the winning run.

“I was really nervous because of the three strikeouts before,” Prevost said. “I just kind of closed my eyes and somehow hit it. I was like, ‘This needs to get hit.'”

Edward Little pitcher Alyssa Levesque kept the Eagles at bay for most of the game. Twelve of the team’s 21 outs came by way of the strikeout, including five of the first six outs of the game.

“That’s at least three games where the pitcher’s done well enough to win the game,” Keene said. “They’re doing their job, and we’re just not quite making the plays behind them right now.”

Prevost matched Levesque early as the teams remained scoreless through a quick three innings.

In the fourth, the Eagles (4-3) took a 1-0 lead on a pair of singles and a stolen base. The Eddies (2-5) responded with a pair in the bottom of the fourth, and took a 4-1 lead in the fifth. Levesque all hitters with three hits and three runs scored.
