DURHAM – A local man who fled from police Friday night was arrested in a wooded area off Route 9 following a foot chase.
Raymond Simpson, 50, of Durham was arrested on charges of operating under the influence, operating after suspension (habitual offender), leaving the scene of a property damage accident, and was issued a summons for no inspection sticker.
He was held overnight at the Androscoggin County Jail and released on $1,000 cash bail Saturday afternoon, a jail spokesman said.
According to state Trooper Paul Casey, Simpson was driving on Route 9 a short distance from the Brianna Drive intersection when his vehicle went off the road while trying to turn around, going down an embankment into the woods. He then fled the scene on foot before police arrived.
Casey and Trooper Tyler Stevenson, along with Stevenson’s K-9 Ramos, responded to a report of the crash at 8:05 p.m. Ramos picked up a scent and they tracked Simpson through a mile and a half of woods, apprehending him about 45 minutes later, Casey said.
Damage to Simpson’s 1994 Jeep was estimated at $4,000.
