NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) – A former bank teller convicted of stealing $278,000 while on the job has avoided jail time.

Federal prosecutors say 40-year-old Daniel Caramazza, of Windsor, was sentenced to five years of probation Monday. He must spend the first six months confined to his home with electronic monitoring.

Caramazza pleaded guilty in January to bank larceny and admitted using the money for travel and gambling.

Caramazza was the teller supervisor at the Webster Bank branch in West Hartford. Authorities say on Oct. 6, Caramazza entered the bank’s vault at least eight times and removed cash. He then reset the vault clock so it could not be reopened until four days later. Bank officers discovered the money missing on Oct. 10. He surrendered two weeks later and handed over a duffel bag containing about $190,000.

Caramazza also has been ordered to pay nearly $90,000 in restitution.
