RUMFORD – Five people have returned nomination papers for a seat on the Board of Selectmen while candidates for most other elective positions are unopposed.

Incumbent Selectmen Gregory R. Buccina, a NewPage Corp. employee, and Mark N. Belanger, a self-employed builder, are seeking second, three-year terms. They are challenged by Robert A. Cameron, a former state legislator, of 349 South Rumford Road, Jason D. Thompson, a Parks Commission member, of Knox Street, and Jeremy K. Vashaw, a member of the Board of Appeals, of 96 Congress St.

For two, three-year terms on the SAD 43 school board, incumbents Marcia A. Chaisson, Knox Street, and Edward F. Flynn, Route 2, have returned nomination papers.

Former school board member David A. McKivergan of the South Rumford Road and incumbent Gloria J. Morton of Ellis River Road are vying for one two-year term on the board.

Town Clerk Jane Giasson said a fourth opening became available last week when SAD 43 board member Diane Paterson submitted her resignation, effective immediately. Giasson said the remaining two years of her three-year term will be filled by write-in ballot.

Running unopposed for their respective positions are: Giasson, for an additional two-year term as town clerk/treasurer; Carlo J. Puiia, for another two-year term as tax collector; and Brian D. Gagnon, for an additional two-year term on the Board of Assessors.

Voters will make their choices during the primary elections on June 10. Besides electing officers, voters will act on the municipal budget, a number of charter amendments and several ordinance changes.
