GREENE – Civil War historian Dennis Sweetser will speak at the Greene Historical Society at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 15, on the life of Wilbur Mower of Greene, who enlisted in the 16th Maine Regiment, Infantry, and survived the Gettysburg Battle of 1863.

Sweetser will also talk about William Merrill of Durham, who lost his life on the Gettysburg battlefield. Merrill was a relative of Sweetser.

Former Greene resident Gary Reed, great-grandson of Wilbur Mower, will display some of the artifacts that belonged to Wilbur Mower.

Sweetser graduated from Edward Little High School and Bates College and taught chemistry at Edward Little for 33 years. He is retired and living at Auburn. His interest in the Civil War began at an early age when his parents took him to Gettysburg.

Reed grew up in the old Mower Homestead and inherited some of Wilbur Mower’s relics. Reed retired from SD Warren of Westbrook after 35 years. He served 10 years in the Maine House of Representatives. He lives at Falmouth.

The Greene Historical Society is located in the Old Town House across from the Androscoggin Grange Hall, 98 Main St., Greene Village. All are welcome.
