NORWAY – The Western Foothills Land Trust’s bird count 2008 annual fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday, May 17, at Bob and Mary Van Nest’s farm at 265 Old Stage Road.

Starting at 7 a.m., the group will set out to identify as many species as possible in a three- hour time frame.

Following a proven route, the group will explore a variety of habitats: pasture, edge, woodlands and field, which yield an average of 47 species, including many warblers and some unusual birds such as bobolinks.

When really lucky, the group might spot a meadowlark, a species in serious decline due to loss of grassland habitat.

The trust is asking for a donation of $10 a person, which includes refreshments around the stove in the farm kitchen after birding.

This year all proceeds will go toward the Roberts Farm Preserve project. The event will be held rain or shine. For additional information, call the Van Nests at 743-8104 or the trust office at 739-2124.
