PARIS – A Bridgton man pleaded guilty Monday in Oxford County Superior Court to damaging a Waterford mobile home and is awaiting a court hearing on restitution.

Jeffry Raymond Barry, 38, of 583 Upper Ridge Road, pleaded guilty to aggravated criminal mischief to the trailer he had been living in on Mill Hill Road.

Assistant District Attorney Joseph O’Connor said the owner of the 14- by 76-foot home had been renting it to tenants who moved out in July 2006. He got a call in the spring of 2007 from the Waterford town office reporting complaints of noise and gunshots at the property, O’Connor said.

He said Barry had identified himself as a tenant at the property and presented documents, including bank statements, as evidence, but the owner had not approved Barry as a tenant. The owner also said the residence and outbuildings were heavily damaged, O’Connor stated.

Defense attorney Maurice Porter said Barry disputed O’Connor’s allegation that Barry and the owner did not know each other well. Porter said the two were social with each other and that no trespass order was served.

“He disputes virtually every statement attributed to him,” Porter said, including the amount of damage to the residence before Barry moved in.

O’Connor said the damage is “probably 10 times the $2,000 minimum” required for a felony aggravated criminal mischief charge.

The damages occurred between October 2006 and June 2007, the indictment states.

Barry decided to plead guilty after Justice Roland Cole confirmed that it would not affect his right to own firearms.
