LEWISTON – A Lewiston man was arrested in a string of downtown fires Saturday.

Lawrence Guy, 20, of 159 Pine St., was charged with arson in connection with fires across the downtown area Saturday afternoon.

Just after noon, police and fire crews went to an alley behind 160 Canal St. for a trash fire. There, they found flames spreading from the alley and to the outside of the Common Ties building.

Firefighters snuffed that blaze but minutes later, another was reported a few blocks away. At the Oak Street parking garage, police found a Nissan Sentra burning on the second level.

Fire crews put out that fire as well, but then a third blaze was reported at Piece and Birch streets where a couch had been set on fire on a sidewalk.

Police said they found Guy walking in the area of that fire and that he matched a description provided by a witness. They also said Guy was carrying a butane lighter when he was questioned by police.

Detectives and Lewiston fire Inspector Paul Ouellette spoke with other potential witnesses and examined the fire scenes while continuing their investigation.

On Tuesday, Guy was questioned again about the fires and charged with arson. He remained at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, police are still searching for suspects in connection with a Sunday morning fire set in a Dumpster along Lisbon Street.

About 10:15 a.m. Sunday, firefighters went to Oxford Networks at 415 Lisbon St. where the contents of the Dumpster were burning.

Witnesses told police they saw a pair of teenagers on skateboards near the trash container just before it went up in flames. Police are searching for those teens.

One is described as a white teenager roughly 130 pounds with dirty blonde hair and wearing a tank top. The other is described as a white teen roughly 180 pounds with black shoulder-length hair.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.
