LISBON – Vickie Osgood knew what it would take to get herself there. She just wasn’t sure what to do when she arrived.
The Lisbon second baseman scored the game’s only run Wednesday on a ground-ball out. She delayed her start from third and raced home on a fielder’s choice at first. She narrowly beat the relay home, tumbling in safely amidst a cloud of dust.
“It wasn’t the prettiest slide, but she got in,” said Lisbon coach Mike Fortier.
Osgood’s score was the only run Emily Moore needed in a 1-0 win over Madison. She scattered six hits and struck out seven to earn the shutout.
“The game plan was to just work the corners and throw a change-up once in awhile,” said Moore, who didn’t walk a single batter.
Madison’s Brit Lichtenfels gave up just five hits but was plagued by four errors in the field.
One of those miscues enabled Osgood to score the winning run. After she led off the second with a single, the plan was for Ashley Beaulieu to bunt her over. After Beaulieu missed on a high pitch, catcher Jess Hayden tried to get Osgood at first. The ball got away, and Osgood scampered to third.
“They gave us two bases on that,” said Fortier. “Ashley came through and put the ball in play.”
Beaulieu followed with a ground ball back to Lichtenfels. After getting the out at first, Madison (4-4) tried to get Osgood breaking for home. The relay was just a little slow and Osgood stumbled and tumbled her way by the late tag.
“I didn’t know if I was diving, sliding or what,” said Osgood. “So I just kind of rolled.
“I’m happy that we got that run in. Ashley did an awesome job there.”
Lisbon (7-1) only got a Kala Michaud single and a Shauna Riordan double after that but couldn’t drive them in.
Madison had its share of chances, but the Greyhounds did a nice job in the field. Catcher Christy McAuliffe threw out Hayden trying to steal in the first. Riordan, at short, turned a double play after grabbing a liner and catching a runner off second. A Hayden hit back to Moore turned into a double play when Michaud, the first baseman, relayed the throw over to third where Sam Purcell tagged out Amanda Costa to end the sixth.
“Emily pitched awesome for us, and we all backed her up,” said Osgood. “It was probably the best defensive game this season for us.”
Madison’s best threat came in the fifth. Lauren Bean reached on an error, and Erin Lightbody followed with a single with two outs. With two runners in scoring position, Moore got an inning-ending strikeout.
“I always just play the batter and try not to worry about the baserunners,” said Moore.
In the seventh, Bianca Stoutamyer singled with two outs. Chantelle Osgood fouled off numerous pitches before Moore got her with a high pitch on a full count.
“Emily had very good control,” said Fortier. “She used her corners and she changed speeds.”
