Lewiston senior gets Plourde Scholarship
LEWISTON – Lewiston High School senior Ashley Morgan has been named the 2008 Alfred A. Plourde Memorial Scholarship winner.
She received a $500 check from City Council President Thomas P. Peters II at the May 6 City Council meeting from funds raised by Plourde’s family and friends following his death in 1990.
Plourde is still remembered for his respect of others and outstanding service as treasurer and mayor of Lewiston.
During the presentation, Peters noted, “Each scholarship applicant had to write about the role of the young political leader in the new millennium, and I would like to quote some of Ashley’s words . . . ‘young political leaders need to encourage their peers to get to know their elders in an effort to close the generational gap in communities.
There are many places that are accomplishing goals with the voice of youth and adults working together . . ‘.”
Peters went on to say that Morgan knew firsthand the positive effects of youth and adults working together, touting her involvement with the city’s successful quest to become an All-America City in 2007 and her tireless leadership in the Lewiston Youth Advisory Council’s U Booze U Looze campaign and production of the film “SMASHED,” which has been approved for driver’s education curriculum statewide.
Morgan will attend Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Ore., in the fall.
