FRYEBURG – Mother’s Day saw five 4-H members, one 4-H alumni, a 4-H leader and two parents participate in the Maine Pony Teamsters Association Fun Day at the Fryeburg Fairgrounds.

Each year the Fun Day is held to help new members with harnessing and driving problems they may have, and this year 4-H horse members were invited to learn about driving.

Nate Cheevers gave a demonstration on the parts and use of a draft harness as he fitted the harness to his Percheron gelding. There were a pair of Haflingers, with 4-H members helping on one pony and a 4-H member harnessing the second pony.

The next event featured Steve Akeley talking on dental care of a horse. He demonstrated floating teeth, explaining why it was important for a horse to have proper dental care. Many questions were asked and answered.

After the demonstrations Cheevers hitched up his Percheron and each member, 4-H leader and parents had an opportunity to go in a single cart. Gloria Hadley hitched a pair of Haflingers to a fore-cart and everyone had a chance to drive a pair.

A barbecue lunch was furnished by Arnold and Sandy Cram and a short business meeting followed. Afterward members went through an obstacle course, which featured different maneuvers.

The Maine Pony Teamsters Association is a group of people who own and drive either ponies or draft horses and many of them can be seen at the fairs in the draft horse and pony shows.

Members of the club are from many counties in Maine, with some in New Hampshire and one member from Vermont. Anyone interested in learning more about the group may contact Gloria Hadley at 674-2367 or Colleen Bursley at 737-8793.
