OAKLAND, Calif. – Dana Eveland pitched a three-hitter for his first career complete game, Jack Cust homered twice and Oakland avoided being swept at home by Tampa Bay for the first time with a 9-1 victory Wednesday.
Eveland (4-3) ended a four-start winless stretch as the A’s stopped a five-game losing streak in the series. It was Oakland’s third victory in 12 games.
Eveland struck out five and walked one, throwing 95 pitches and winning for the first time since April 25.
Bobby Crosby broke a scoreless tie with a two-run double in the third. Jack Hannahan hit a solo homer in the fifth and Cust added a two-run shot to make it 6-0.
Andy Sonnanstine (6-2) struck out a season-high six and had his five-game winning streak snapped.
Angels 4, Blue Jays 3
TORONTO – Vladimir Guerrero hit two home runs, Jon Garland remained unbeaten in Toronto and the Los Angeles Angels edged the Blue Jays 4-3 on Wednesday night.
It was the 34th career multihomer game for Guerrero, who came in batting .260 with just four homers, his lowest career totals after 45 games.
Guerrero quickly set about erasing that slow start, clubbing a solo shot to center in the first and adding a three-run drive into the second deck in left in the third. He finished 2-4 with four RBIs, struck out swinging in the fifth and flied to center in the eighth.
Garland (5-3) has lost just once in his past seven starts. He gave up three runs and eight hits in six innings, walked two and struck out one.
The right-hander is 6-0 with a 4.47 ERA in ten career games at Rogers Centre and 10-2 overall in 14 career starts against the Blue Jays.
Jose Arredondo worked the seventh, Scot Shields pitched the eighth and Francisco Rodriguez closed it out in the ninth for his major league-leading 19th save.
Blue Jays right-hander Shaun Marcum (4-3) worked on two days rest after going just one inning because of a rain delay in Sunday’s game at Philadelphia. Marcum lost for the first time since April 26 at Kansas City and has not won in three starts, his longest streak of the season.
Marcum allowed four runs and four hits in 6 2-3 innings. He walked three and struck out seven.
Toronto scored one in the first on an RBI single by Matt Stairs, but the Blue Jays didn’t get another hit until the fifth. Alex Rios made it 4-2 with Toronto’s third hit of that inning, a two-out single to center.
The Blue Jays cut it to 4-3 when Lyle Overbay doubled and scored on Gregg Zaun’s single in the sixth, but Brad Wilkerson lined out to first to leave two runners stranded.
Tigers 9 Mariners 4
DETROIT – Marcus Thames hit a grand slam that highlighted a seven-run third inning and the Detroit Tigers beat the Seattle Mariners 9-4 Wednesday night.
The Tigers opened their big inning with five straight singles off Jarrod Washburn (2-6) before Thames drove his fifth career slam into the Detroit bullpen in left field. Kenny Rogers (4-4) allowed four runs in 5 1-3 innings. Richie Sexson and Yuniesky Betancourt hit solo homers for the Mariners.
Thames doubled in the second and scored Detroit’s first run on Brandon Inge’s two-out double.
Ivan Rodriguez, Miguel Cabrera and Carlos Guillen had RBI singles in the Tigers third, setting up Thames’ slam. The four RBIs were a season high for Thames.
Washburn was pulled after giving up 12 hits and all nine runs in 2 1-3 innings. It was his shortest start since Sept. 19, 2006.
The Mariners, beaten 12-8 by the Tigers on Tuesday night, are an AL-worst 7-16 on the road.
Phillies 12, Nationals 2
WASHINGTON – After scoring only one run in their previous two games, the Philadelphia Phillies hit four home runs in a 12-2 rout of the Washington Nationals on Wednesday night.
Ryan Howard went 3-for-5 and drove in four runs with a double and his 11th and 12th homers, while Shane Victorino and Pedro Felix had three hits each as the Phillies piled up 15 hits and a season-high in runs.
Jamie Moyer (4-3) took the easy victory by throwing six scoreless innings.
Matt Chico (0-6), getting a fill-in start for Shawn Hill (sore elbow), allowed Howard’s RBI double in the first, Feliz’s home run in the second and homers by Victorino and Howard in the fifth.
