LIMINGTON (AP) – Officials say a $4,000 racehorse had to be put to death after being shot on a farm.

Authorities went to a farm, where horse owner Peggy Tardif told WCSH-TV she heard a shot at about 4 p.m. Tuesday.

But she said it wasn’t until an hour later, while bringing food to the horse, that she discovered the animal had been shot. The horse’s shoulder was shattered, and a veterinarian had to put the animal down.

York County sheriff’s officials are investigating. Tardif is offering a $500 reward.
