FARMINGTON – The Memorial Day service at American Legion Post 28 will begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday, District Commander Charles Bennett said.

A color guard will lay a wreath at the World War I Memorial on Main Street at 9 a.m. then proceed to the legion for the service.

Following an opening prayer by Chaplain Robert Stevens, Post Commander John Gee will introduce the guest speaker, state Sen. Peter Mills.

A dedication to honor a local World War II veteran will be held. Bennett will also honor Travis Hill, an Iraq war veteran and May graduate of UMF, for standing beside him during the April art project at the university that featured flags spread on the floor of Olsen Student Center. Bennett will present Hill with a plaque from the National American Legion, he said.

A wreath will be laid at the post monument and then the parade will begin at approximately 10 a.m. Sheriff Dennis Pike will lead the procession. This year marks his 50th year of involvement with the parade, Pike said.

The parade will follow High Street to Anson then to Meetinghouse Park where wreaths will be placed at the Civil War, World War II and Veterans memorials. The parade will continue down Main Street to Lower Main and on to Falls Road to Riverside Cemetery for a wreath laying and 21-gun salute. Firing squad members from Hosmer-Edwards Post No. 117 in Wilton will perform the salute.

The parade will continue back to the town office where it will disband. A light lunch will be served by the auxiliary at the American Legion after the parade. It is open to everyone, Bennett said.

Services before the parade in Jay and Livermore Falls on Monday begin with a gathering of participants, the honor guard and firing squad and bugler at 6:30 a.m. at VFW Post 3335.

From there, the ceremony schedule includes:

Livermore Falls Memorial Bridge, 7 a.m., ceremony by Amvets Post 33;

Livermore Veterans Memorial, 7:20 a.m., ceremony by American Legion Post 10;

Jay POW/MIA Bridge, 7:45 a.m., ceremony by VFW Post 3335;

Jay Hill Cemetery, 8:15 a.m., ceremony by Hyla Friedman and Jay citizens.

Parade participants will line up at 9 a.m. at the Memco Building on Main Street in Jay. The parade will begin at 10 a.m.

The parade route includes stops at:

• Chisholm Square World War II monument for prayer and ceremony by the Knights of Columbus.

• Richardson Cemetery monument for prayer and ceremony by the Amvets Post 33.

• Grand Army of the Republic monument for prayer and ceremony by VFW Post 3335.

• Livermore Falls Park World War I and World War II monuments for prayer and ceremony by the American Legion Post 10.

• Fire, police and emergency services: prayer and wreath laying.

Following the parade Amvets Post 33 will hold prayer and a ceremony at the Fayette Veterans Memorial and VFW Post 3335 will hold prayer and a ceremony at the VFW monument.
