BETHEL – The “Hip-Hop Handbook,” a performance group dedicated to the promotion of literacy and creative expression through the Hip-Hop Arts, will teach and perform at Telstar Middle/High School on Friday, May 30.

During the school day, the group will give workshops to middle and high school students, educating them about the history of hip-hop, along with hands-on instruction in emceeing, deejaying, graffiti arts and breakdancing.

In the evening, the group will present a showcase of their talents on the Telstar auditorium stage. The showcase will include performances of musical rap, DJ turntables, vocal percussion and breakdancing.

The “Hip-Hop Handbook” was started in 2006 by a hip hop duo known as the Rebelz. They began a mission to teach and entertain by putting together a showcase representing all the elements of hip-hop that teaches the history of one of America’s first music cultures.

Their goal is to build confidence in youth, promote the positiveness of the hip-hop culture and instill self-esteem in kids by helping them express themselves through the art form.

Their workshops and performances provide students of all ages with the opportunity to experience various forms of urban music and dance expression in a safe and positive format.

Last year alone the “Hip-Hop Handbook” performed in 30 states, clocking more than 90,000 miles. They performed for more than 150,000 students from elementary to college levels.

The “Hip-Hop Handbook” performance will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium at the Telstar Complex, 284 Walker’s Mills Road. Admission will be $4, and all proceeds will benefit the TMS Visiting Artists Fund, which will help to bring visiting artists and performers to the school next year.
