Leavitt Area High School tuned up fpr KVAC and state competition with an impressive sweep of a five-team home meet Friday.
The boys topped Mt. Blue by 37 points. Ryan Fitzsimmons won both the racewalk and long jump. Other event conquerors included L.T. Sierra (800), Lauren Turner (high jump), Brandon Maher (pole vault) and Josh Strickland (shot put).
Twenty-four points separated the Hornets from the Cougars on the girls’ side. Allison Fereshetian swept the hurdles. Hailee Mulherin topped both the long jump and triple jump. Leavitt also ruled all three relays.
Bucs are back
After combining for merely 26 points in the last four Class C state meets, Elan School of Poland Spring may be ready to make some noise in the boys’ championship this spring.
Ever the independent, Elan traveled all the way to the final Penobscot Valley Conference small-school meet of the regular season at Orono High School and won Friday’s event. Ten schools competed.
Elan finished with 141 points, topping Foxcroft (113) and Orono (110). Orono wound up third at the 2007 Class C state meet behind North Yarmouth Academy and Lisbon.
Depth boosted the Buccaneers, who won three individual events. Malcolm Turner topped the 110-meter hurdles over teammate John Tyler Orders. Orders returned the favor in the 300-meter companion event.
Orders teamed with Lee Gach, Carl Figgueredo and Anthony Collichio for a win in the 4×100 relay. Gach also scored points in the 100, 200 and 400.
Walk with a purpose
Edward Little High School’s racewalk team is planning an all-night marathon in conjunction with the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life at the school on June 13-14.
EL seeks a team of 8 to 15 walkers from local schools to be part of the chain from 6 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday. One lane will be kept open for the racewalkers, who are asked to raise a minimum of $30 each in pledges.

Route 26 bragging rights went to Poland Regional High School with a sweep of last week’s meet at Gray-New Gloucester.
Poland breezed to a 156-102 boys’ win over NYA, with G-NG third at 91 points. Nick Williams and T.J. England both turned in triple individual victories. Williams swept his showdowns in the 100 and 200 meters against Gray’s Ben Miklovich.
The Knights nearly tripled their nearest competition in the girls’ meet, pushing past the Patriots, 183.5 to 62.5. Brittany Bell was a four-time winner.
