PEABODY, Mass. (AP) – Firefighters battled a massive fire at an apartment building in Peabody on Thursday.

Flames consumed the roof of the building and the thick black smoke that poured from the fire could be seen from Boston, about 12 miles south.

No injuries were reported.

The building is part of a larger complex known as the Highlands at Dearborn, near the heavily traveled junction of Route 1 and Route 128.

Officials said there were 23 units in the building that caught fire.

He said two other buildings in the complex were also evacuated by firefighters as a precaution.

Fitzgerald said the city is making plans to provide temporary shelter to displaced residents, and the local Red Cross is providing assistance.
