Western Foothills Land Trust birders recorded 37 species of birds on their annual bird count walk May 17 at the Van Nest farm in Norway. Following a proven route, the group explored a variety of habitats that has dependably yielded an average of 47 species. The reduced number of species observed this year was attributed to somewhat cool temperatures and storms in the southern and mid-Atlantic states that may have delayed the arrival of some migratory species. Highlights of the walk were clear views of a scarlet tanager, an oven bird and several bobolinks.
