AUBURN – Four young people will attend Girls and Boys State during the week of June 15 to 20 to represent Edward Little High School. Both programs teach young people about the importance of getting involved in state and local government.

The week-long activities include participation in presentations by guest speakers, small group work and simulations. Two other students have been chosen as alternates.

Karen Leary and Muriel Schwinn will represent ELHS at Girls State.

Leary, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Justin Leary, has been active in sports, playing field hockey, basketball and lacrosse. She will be co-captain of the field hockey team next fall. She has served as class secretary and co-president.

Under her leadership the class of 2009 recently put on a successful prom, “Through Neptune’s Gate.”

Schwinn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Schwinn, has played soccer, run indoor track and has been a member of the outdoor track team for three seasons. She has been the state runner-up in the long jump in indoor and outdoor track.

Annie Helmkamp, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Helmkamp, is the alternate. She has played soccer all three years and been a member of the indoor and outdoor track teams. She has qualified for the KVAC all three years in the 400-meter dash. Helmkamp was a member of this year’s prom committee.

All three were inducted into the National Honor Society and are members of the Kickoff Mentor Program at ELHS. All three are on the math team.

Ethan Grund and Corey Therriault will represent ELHS at Boys State at Castine.

Grund, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Grund, has been president and vice president of his class. He is a three-season athlete, playing soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter and running track in the spring.

Therriault, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Therriault, has played soccer as well as basketball for all three years.

Both were inducted into the National Honor Society this spring, and both were members of the ELHS runner-up boys basketball Class A Team East in February.

Grady Burns, alternate, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Burns. He is a three-season athlete: football, indoor track and outdoor track. As a junior, he is the captain of the outdoor and indoor track teams. His event is mainly the shot put, although he competes in javelin, the long jump and runs sprints.

Burns is a member of the Latin Club. Recently he was part of the ELHS team that won the “Big Read” competition in the Lewiston-Auburn area.

All three young men are part of the ELHS Kickoff Mentor program.
