Dandelions, pictured here in Georgetown, are deeply rooted, and the plant got its English name from a corruption from the French, dent-de-lion, meaning “lion’s tooth,” because of its coarsely-toothed leaves. The flower head changes into a white, globular seed head and the seed has a tiny parachute, enabling it to spread far and wide in the wind. Depending upon one’s view, it is often regarded as a gardener’s pest, although some prefer to eat the plant at a very young age. Others make wine from the flowers.
