AUBURN – A Lewiston woman accused of attacking a man with a bar glass in March was indicted Wednesday in the slashing that left the victim with 37 stitches in his face.
Darcy Ann Pabst, 22, was indicted on charges of aggravated assault and elevated aggravated assault.
Pabst is accused of slashing 22-year-old Colby Gilbert’s face with a broken martini-style glass on March 5 at the Margaritas restaurant on Center Street. Gilbert spent two days in a Lewiston hospital.
Pabst was arrested minutes after the attack when she ran to a nearby hotel. She later said she did not mean to cut Gilbert and that she only flung a glass at him because she believed he was doing to dump a drink on her.
According to court records, Pabst and Gilbert were sitting at separate tables with groups of friends and they had been antagonizing each other all night.
At one point, according to a police affidavit, Gilbert grabbed chips and salsa from the table where Pabst was sitting.
Later, Pabst walked up to Gilbert and wiped salsa on the side of his face, according to the court document. Both Pabst and Gilbert, as well as their friends, remained at the restaurant close to closing time.
Gilbert told police he was approaching Pabst shortly after midnight to apologize to her when she slashed him with a glass.
Pabst said she was afraid of Gilbert and his friends and felt she had no choice but to defend herself.
Some of Gilbert’s friends and family believe the assault was intentional.
Police said the fact that a weapon was used to inflict a serious injury supports the charge of elevated aggravated assault, a charge punishable by up to 30 years in prison.
Gilbert, an Auburn native, played hockey for Edward Little High School and later, for the Lewiston Maineiacs.
Pabst was released on bail shortly after she was arrested. In an interview following her release, Pabst said she was hoping to apologize to Gilbert. However, bail conditions prohibit her from having contact with him.
Pabst will be summoned to answer the charges against her at a court hearing later this week or next week.
