Dear Sun Spots: We all know to move as far to the right of the road when an ambulance or police car is coming behind us going in the same direction; but do we always have to move as far right as we can when they are going in the opposite direction, even on a two lane highway or road? Is it a law that we must do this? Thank you. – No Name, No Town.

Answer: According to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland, vehicles are to pull over in both directions. He cites provision 29-A MRSA sec. 2054, sub-sec. 4 which reads “an authorized emergency vehicle operated in response to, but not returning from, a call or fire alarm or operated in pursuit of an actual or suspected violator of the law has the right of way when emitting a visual signal using an emergency light and an audible signal using a bell or siren. On the approach of any such vehicle, the operator of every other vehicle shall immediately draw that vehicle as near as practicable to the right-hand curb, parallel to the curb and clear of any intersection and bring it to a standstill until the authorized emergency vehicle has passed.” You should also note that failure to do so is punishable by a minimum fine of $250 for the first offense and for a second offense occurring within three years of the first offense, a mandatory 30-day suspension of a driver’s license.

Dear Sun Spots: On Friday, May 23, I was privileged along with the Just Us Entertainers to perform at the Sabattus Central School for their Veterans Day celebration. It was a very moving experience as the students had invited members of their family who had served in the military to be their guests at the celebration.

Several students wrote a short biography about their individual invited guests and read the essays before the assembly with their invited guests standing with them at the microphone. You could see the pride these students had for these veterans. The members of the Just Us Entertainers were very impressed with the students’ presentations. Two members of Just Us were honored by a student as the students honored their veteran moms, dads, uncles, grandfathers and other relatives.

The staff of Sabattus Central School wish to thank Ms. Lanteigne and her staff as well as Melissa Noel for inviting us to perform at such a wonderful event. We hope to return to next year’s Memorial Day celebration at Sabattus Central School. – Nel Meservier, Lewiston.
