In the race for Maine Senate, Democrats will have the choice of voting between two proven Democrats, Margaret Craven and Elaine Makas, and a third candidate, Paul Madore, who is anything but a Democrat.

Yes, Madore is running as a Democrat, and professes to be a Democrat, but, his track record proves otherwise.

He ran as a Republican in 1994 and then again in 1996. He failed both times. Apparently believing he could improve his odds of getting elected, he then began running as a Democrat.

Was this due to some change of heart?

Did Madore’s positions suddenly fall in line with those of the Democratic party?

Hardly.

Democrats need look no further than Madore’s positions in his latest campaign to see where his true loyalties lie. In the race for Maine’s 1st Congressional District, he has endorsed Dean Scontras, a conservative Republican.

Madore was on the board of directors of the Christian Civic League, which also endorsed Scontras, and which endorsed Mike Huckabee for president.

Madore has been endorsed by fellow right-wing activists Ray Richardson, George Rodrigues and Michael Heath.

A scan of blogs discussing local politics reveals that Madore’s supporters view him as loyal to the causes of the right wing.

One apparent supporter on these blogs has referred to the Democratic Party as evil.

We need a real Democrat for state Senate.
