In my opinion, Bates Mill No. 5 should be developed into something that can help the economy. I believe it should be made into something profitable, while retaining the historical essence that it is known for.
Destroying the building would cost a few million dollars. City officials should put this money into the development of the mill. The four acres part of the mill covers could be used to help the economy. Demolition would just mean there would must be something built to replace it.
Other buildings in the complex have been a good revenue source. This section could make even more substantial profit. The whole complex has actually generated $32 million in investments.
It is also a good idea to develop the mill because it would create jobs. The businesses running in the complex have made 1,200 jobs. Adding another section would make more.
I also want the mill to stay because it is a historical landmark.
It is one of the few remaining historical places in Lewiston.
There is a downside for developing the mill. It would cost several million dollars more to restore it, than destroy it. This is money that the city may not have. It could be an expensive and long process to develop Mill No. 5.
The mill should be kept as a complex to create more jobs and stimulate the economy in Lewiston-Auburn. It is a notable historical landmark. I believe it should be developed and used it to help our community.
