WINDHAM – Leave nothing behind.
That was the goal with Saturday’s Class A track championship on the line.
Emily Dodge, Muriel Schwinn, Danielle Paul and Hanna Mogensen knew the final race of the day would decide everything.
“Our motto going into it was ‘Leave everything on the track,'” said Dodge. “We knew we had to try as hard as we could. We knew for a long time coming what the difference was and exactly what we needed to do.”
The Edward Little girls trailed Scarborough going into the final relay and needed to edge the Red Storm for a shot at the state title that eluded the Red Eddies last year.
EL Coach Rebecca Hefty put out her four best runners, but the Red Eddies couldn’t catch the Red Storm. Scarborough edged EL by two seconds in the 4×400 relay and won the state title by two points, 72-70.
“If I had to bring it down to four kids, they were the best four kids,” said Hefty. “I told them going in, ‘You know, if it ends with a second, you did everything we could do to get it, and you can’t complain.'”
Scarborough was only seeded a half-second better than EL in the race. Though EL led for most of the meet, the Red Storm took the lead thanks to points in the discus, pole vault and triple jump. Scarborough’s group of Abby Chick, Whitney Chamberlain, Christy Manning and Annie Mills led EL the entire decisive relay race. The Red Storm finished in 4:14.98 while EL was 4:16.04.
“They ran a personal best,” said Hefty. “You can’t do any better than that. They gave everything they had.”
EL had to juggle its relay lineup because Danielle Paul has been battling illness all week. Dodge started in the lead spot, which was new for her. Schwinn went second but still couldn’t gain on the Scarborough runner ahead of her. Paul gave a gallant effort and stayed within reach. Mogensen closed the gap slightly, but the Red Storm managed to hold on.
“We all did what we could do,” said Dodge. “We all left it on the track.”
The boys’ meet also came down to the final race. Thornton managed to edge Bonny Eagle to win with 79 points. The Scots were second with 78. Brunswick and Morse followed with 60 and 50 respectively. EL finished fifth with 49.
The EL girls built their lead in the racewalk. Christie Bernier won the race and Teresa Ranucci was second.
“You know you have to go out real fast and kind of maintain it,” said Bernier, who won the same event last year. “I wanted to keep my title.”
EL also got points in the javelin when Frankie Lally took fifth and Diana Kruzewski was sixth. Schwinn was fifth in the 100 and second in the long jump, while Abby Downs was fourth in the high jump. EL was also third in the 4×100 relay with Downs, Hali Henry, Allyson Butler and Schwinn.
EL had 58-34 lead after 11 events, but Scarborough closed the gap. Dodge took second in the triple jump, and Downs added a sixth to keep close with the Red Storm.
Paul was seeded third in the 800 but finished eighth. She was also part of the 4×800 relay with Kelsey Blanchette, Morgan Wilkins and Mogensen. It was seeded ninth but took fourth.
“It really hurt having Danielle sick,” said Hefty. “That was a real bummer, but what can you do about it? We picked up everywhere else.”
The Lewiston girls finished 12th overall with 25 points. Lea Morin led the charge with a third in the 100, 200 and a fifth in the 400. Toby Crispin added a fourth in the 1,600. Morin, Crispin, Erin Glann and Ruth Choate also earned a third in the 4×400 relay.
Messalonskee’s Jesse Labreck won four events, taking the high jump, 100 hurdles, triple jump and 300 hurdles.
The EL boys’ got a win from its 4×100 relay team of Dustin Haupt, Ben Hartnett, Steven Giorgetti and Merton Foss. Foss added a fifth in the 200. EL got points in the 800 from Jeremy Theriault (second) and Tyler Gammon (fifth). Dylon Therien took third in the javelin and fourth in the discus while Josh Clark was third in the pole vault. Keith Tremblay added a fourth in the racewalk.
The Lewiston boys’ tied for 12th with 20 points. Mohamed Noor finished second in the 1,600 to Bangor’s Riley Masters. Josh Pelletier took fourth in the javelin.
The Mt. Blue boys’ finished 19th with five points. Sam Mungin finished fourth in the 400 for the Cougars.
The Oxford Hills girls got a point form Amelia Moore in the high jump.
