There is a single bond issue on the ballot today which, while important, is not likely the big draw for voters.
The $29 million bond, if passed, will leverage another $29 million in federal funds to pay for natural resource, agriculture and transportation projects. Seems like a sound investment, but the real draw for voters today are primaries to decide on party candidates for November’s general election, plus decisions in many towns across Maine on school spending and electing municipal officials.
Every election is advanced by a fair amount of citizen grumbling about government spending and public policy. The Secretary of State’s Office is predicting a low voter turnout today, which would indicate the public is generally pleased with our current government.
Recent letters to the editor suggest otherwise, and insist instead that we’ve had enough of spending, aren’t spending tax money on the right things and aren’t sending the right people to serve in the House, the Senate or on local boards of selectmen.
Feel like you have something to say? Say it today at the polls. Exercise your power to select the government you want, not the government that results from voter apathy.
