BETHEL (AP) – Despite days of stifling 80-degree heat, Olympia is not ready to melt into oblivion.
But the world’s tallest snow woman is a mere remnant of her former self. The once-proud 122-foot mountain of white snow has given way to a dirty pile surrounded by green grass.
Olympia’s creator, the Bethel Chamber of Commerce, expected her to be gone by June 9. Her predecessor, “Angus, King of the Mountain,” melted by June 10 in 1999, but he started out 10 feet shorter.
Entrants in Bethel’s 50/50 raffle who bet that Olympia would be gone by Tuesday are out of luck. The bets covered a wide range of dates, some as late as September.
