It turns out Garrett Olson won’t be an All-Star this year. And he doesn’t really mind.

Olson had been scheduled to start at third base in Tuesday’s Midwest League All-Star Game. But right now, his career is headed south, to the Florida State League.

Olson, of South Paris, was called up from the Beloit Snappers to the Minnesota Twins’ High-A affiliate, the Fort Myers Miracle, on Monday. The Miracle began the second half of their season against the Dunedin Blue Jays on Monday night.

The 23-year-old infielder initially was headed for Midland, Mich. because the Midwest League’s 14 managers had voted him a starter for the mid-season classic there. Snappers manager Nelson Prada said Olson had impressed everyone with his versatility and professional approach to the game. Only his struggles with a revamped swing were holding him back, but the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School product had made great strides in the last couple of weeks.

Olson went out with a bang in his last game for the Snappers, going 4-for-5, including a triple and his fifth homer of the season, scoring three runs and knocking in four on Saturday. He went 8-for-18 in his final four games in Beloit, raising his batting average to .247.

He was one of four Snappers promoted to Fort Myers, along with Danny Lehmann, Steve Singleton and Matt Williams. They were to take a flight to Tampa on Monday and meet up with the Miracle, which just clinched the first-half West Division title in the FSL, in time for last night’s game.

The quartet got out of Beloit just in time. They left the Wisconsin city as rising flood waters forced cancellation of Sunday’s game.

The Twins selected Olson with their second pick in the fourth round (126th overall) of the 2006 June draft. Fort Myers represents his third rung on the organizational ladder. He started his career at Short-A Elizabethton, Tenn., where he batted .313 in 2006. Last year, he hit .219 in his first full season at Beloit.
