LISBON FALLS – The Lisbon Library Department has announced the beginning of the Wings, Stings and Leggy Things Summer Reading Program for children ages 5 to young adult on Wednesday, June 25.

Kids will discover the world of insects through the Chewonki program’s Bugmobile. The children will be introduced to the characteristics of the four major groups of arthropods through the use of models, activities and live specimens.

Due to space constraints, the Bugmobile will give three performances: 1, 2:15 and 3:30 p.m. Parents must bring their children into the library prior to June 25 to enroll them in the program and to obtain a ticket for a specific performance of the Bugmobile.

Each Tuesday, July 1 to 29, the children are invited to the Children’s Room at 1:30 p.m. for a literature-based activity followed by a craft time.

The participants are encouraged to update their reading logs and add to the Bookworm that will encircle the library. Prizes will be earned, and the children may select books to sign out for the following week.

Children who are unable to participate in the Tuesday activities may still participate in the summer reading program. They are welcome to visit the library at a time that is convenient for them and their parents.

The culminating activity for the Wings, Stings and Leggy Things program will be held Monday, Aug. 2, at the MTM Center.

The Maine Humanities Council presented the Lisbon Library Department a grant to hire Greg McAdams to present his program, “Stop Bugging Me, I’m Reading!” McAdams makes books come alive for children through the use of puppetry, storytelling, magic tricks, book talks and audience participation.

An award ceremony will follow the performance. Children will receive participation certificates, and those children who earned prizes one through five throughout July will receive their specially selected paperback book for their home libraries, purchased with a grant obtained from the Central Maine Credit Union’s “Books for Kids” program.
