Dear Sun Spots: Our company has accumulated a substantial amount of empty laser jet print cartridges. If any organization is collecting these as a fundraiser, they are welcome to come and pick them up during our normal business hours. Please call Beverly at Eastern Fire Protection in Auburn at 784-1507 between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. – Beverly, Auburn.

Answer: In April, Sun Spots published an inquiry for used cell phones, laser cartridges and ink jet cartridges. Calvary Christian Academy in Turner is having a fundraiser to purchase a new playground. You may contact Mary at 225-3665, or e-mail cca@teacher.com to see if she is still interested in them.

Dear Sun Spots: Believe it or not, it is time to organize your summer schedule. Anyone who lives in Maine knows that every organization in our state tries to plan fundraisers between the middle of June and the first of October. With all the wonderful “buying” opportunities ahead, it is time to get out your calendar and mark off those not-to-be-missed fundraising events. The East Otisfield Free Baptist Church suggests you check off July 12 as a red-letter day for anyone interested in crafts, flowers, white elephant goodies and food – glorious food. The craft fair is being held at the Oxford Hills Consolidated High School in Norway on that day. Doors open at 9 a.m. Not only will you have a wonderful time exploring all the tables, you will be helping the church help young people who are planning to further their education. If you would like information about the fair, please call Marian at 743-9832. – No Name, No Town.

Dear Sun Spots: From 1961 through 1977, I worked as a clerk for First National Stores Inc. in Norway and South Paris. I’m looking for a union contact regarding retirement pension services as a result of this work. I would appreciate any information you could provide.-No Name, No Town.

Answer:
First National Stores, later known as Finast, was a retail supermarket brand in the northeastern United States until being absorbed by Edwards and its Dutch parent Royal Ahold in the mid-1990s. Hanna McDonald, Ahold’s pension administration manager, told us that while Ahold did acquire First National, it’s only responsible for nonunion employees that meet certain criteria since First National dissolved its pension plan in 1984 and all vested participants were cashed out at that time.

She suggests that you should try to call the United Food and Commercial Workers Union at 1-800-531-2385 to see if they have any records of the contract.
