PRINCETON, N.J. – Grover Cleaveland, twice president of the United States died at 8:40 o’clock this morning at his home, “Westland,” in this college town, where he had lived since his retirement as the mation’s chief executive almost 12 years ago.

An official statement given out and signed by three physicians gave heart trouble, superinduced by stomach and kidney ailments of long standing, as the cause of death.

50 years ago, 1958

AUBURN – Chief of Police Alton E. Savage said yesterday he has found Auburn people are being “very reasonable” about his requests that they clean up the city. Savage said he has contacted several persons throughout the city in line with the city’s new policy of cracking down on wildcat junk yards and nuisances, and he said all greeted his proposals in a reasonable manner. The police chief reported that in several instances the clean-up is in process now and is nearing completion.

25 years ago, 1983

With the blessing of the state, a dogfish processing plant is to begin spreading its waste over several farms in Maine. The Board of Environmental Protection on Wednesday approved the experimental spreading of dogfish waste as fertilizer. The waste, which has a high nitrogen content, will be used at several farms in the Knox County towns of Washington and Union.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – The Kennedy Space Center post office mailed out 25,000 stamped envelopes Friday commemorating a first-time Florida shuttle landing that didn’t happen. “They’re not going to be worth the stamp that’s on them,” said Hubert James, a post office worker who is no collector. Some people will probably be very happy to have a “first day cover” from a day that wasn’t the first. Mistakes that bear a postal imprimatur have a way of gaining in value, although a distribution of 25,000 has a way of diluting that.
