ANDOVER – Two Harley-Davidson riders from Hebron and Andover were hurt Wednesday night when one of them struck a moose with his motorcycle on Route 120.

John Ponte Jr., 57, of Merrill Hill Road in Hebron was driving north at about 9:15 p.m. when his bike collided with the front legs of a moose as it stepped onto the highway at a marked moose crossing, Oxford County Deputy George Cayer said.

Michael Kenney, 51, of Andover, riding behind his friend, laid his bike down when he came upon the scene, Cayer said.

The men suffered bruises and scrapes to their faces, hands and arms and were taken to Rumford Hospital. The moose returned to the woods.

Damage to Ponte’s 1999 Harley was estimated at between $5,000 and $6,000; to Kenney’s, between $7,000 and $8,000.
