PERTH ANDOVER, New Brunswick (AP) – Police have confirmed the identity of the teenage girl who was pulled from the St. John River near the Maine border.

Grand Falls, New Brunswick, Police Chief Jean Real Michaud said Friday the body was that of 13-year-old Shannon Bernard, who was swept away last Friday while swimming with friends in the Grand Falls area.

The group was in a dangerous area near the Wells in the Rocks lookout, a popular tourist spot overlooking a gorge and falls.

The body was spotted Thursday morning floating in an area between the Tobique First Nation and Perth Andover.

Grand Falls police chief Jean Real Michaud says Bernard’s parents have been contacted.
