Sunday proved to be a busy day for area fire departments as Mother Nature landed at least two lightening bolts close to home, one leading to the loss of a Litchfield man’s barn.
According to Litchfield fire Chief Stanley Labbe, the department responded to a 10:24 a.m. call to the Hallowell Road home of Tom Campbell after a lightning bolt struck a barn on his property and engulfed the structure in flames.
More than 50 firefighters from Litchfield and six other departments responded to battle the blaze, Labbe said, but they were unable to save the barn. He said that Campbell lost several farm tools and equipment, but no animals.
Later Sunday, firefighters from Mechanic Falls were called to a Lewiston Avenue mobile home at about 8 p.m. after it was reported that the structure had been struck by lightning. According to a dispatcher with the Androscoggin Sheriff’s Department, the home suffered a power surge, but no other damage.
