LISBON FALLS – Civil War historian and living history performer Charles Plummer will present at the July 9 meeting of the Lisbon Historical Society. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Marion T. Morse School on School Street. Refreshments will be served following the meeting.

When the Battle of Gettysburg ended, it was hailed as one of the greatest victories of the Union Army of the Potomac. Celebrations were held across the North as a grateful people cheered the victory. But a dark mood prevailed in the White House where Lincoln cried in frustation as General George Meade let Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia escape safely back to Virginia.

Plummer will probe beyond the popular anecdotes and conventional wisdom about the Civil War as he offers a fascinating look at Lincoln’s relationship with his commanding generals. During his talk Plummer will examine the relationship between Lincoln and five key generals: George McClellan, Joseph Hooker, George Meade, William Tecumseh Sherman, and Ulysses S. Grant.

It is Plummer’s contention that no other episode has been more pivotal in our nation’s history than the Civil War and yet so much of these massive events turned on a few distinctive personalities. During his presentation he will present a portrait that will take his audience inside the individual relationships that shaped the course of our most costly war.
