RUMFORD – Selectmen will decide what steps to take to fill the town manager’s job when they meet on Thursday.
With two police jobs eliminated, they also will discuss options for coverage with the chief in closed session.
The regular, twice-monthly meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Municipal Auditorium.
Interim Town Manager Len Greaney said the board plans to meet with police Chief Stacy Carter and the union’s shop steward to look at labor negotiations. People at last month’s town meeting approved a police department budget that eliminated two full-time patrol positions.
Greaney said an announcement outlining coverage and other police matters should be made after the closed session.
The board also will decide whether to launch a full-fledged search for a new town manager.
Selectmen decided at their previous meeting to opt out of a suggestion that Rumford and Mexico share one town manager. Greaney said selectmen may also decide to keep him as interim town manager, for a specific period of time.
The need for a new town manager arose when former Town Manager Jim Doar decided not to seek renewal of his contract on June 10.
In other matters, selectmen are expected to choose a citizen of the year from three nominees. They also will appoint more than a dozen people to municipal boards and committees, discuss and possibly act on an auditorium rental policy, and award a contract to buy a new grader.
Greaney also is expected to make suggestions for improving the acoustics in the auditorium.
