AUBURN – A plan to divert southbound traffic off Turner Street will be presented on July 9.

Developers of a proposed Union Street Walgreens hope to change the left lane of southbound Turner Street. Traffic there splits, with cars in the left lane continuing south down Turner Street and cars in the right lane traveling along Union Street.

“Walgreens would like to restrict that left lane so that all the traffic will go down Union Street,” said Community Service Director Eric Labelle. The company would install a new traffic signal farther south along Union Street for traffic headed downtown.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in City Council chambers.

The proposal is part of a traffic engineering study that must be completed before Walgreens can get state approval to build a store on Union Street.

“Part of the requirement for the permit is to get public feedback on the plan,” Labelle said. “So, the entire discussion is not far enough along to say when work could begin. They need to find out if this change is acceptable to most of the residents. They’ll take that feedback and decide what their next steps need to be.”
