AUGUSTA (AP) – A Roman Catholic priest who took his life after being informed that he would be suspended pending an investigation of his alleged sexual abuse of a minor 29 years ago has been laid to rest.

A funeral Mass for the Rev. James Robichaud was held Tuesday at St. Augustine Catholic Church, followed by burial at the Holy Family Cemetery in Augusta.

Robichaud was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head Friday in the rectory of Our Lady of Snows in Dover-Foxcroft the day after he learned of the allegation against him.

A Boston attorney who represents the abuse victim said his client is saddened and respects the grieving of Robichaud’s family and friend, but felt an obligation to herself and others to report the abuse.
