PORTLAND – The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate Sunday’s fatal motorcycle crash that also involved a sheriff’s deputy and dispatcher.

Police said Rochelle Plummer, 43, of Gray was thrown from her motorcycle and died as a result of the wreck that involved five other motorcyclists.

Plummer was the wife of Gray fire Captain Will Plummer. Three of the riders involved were firefighters for the Gray Fire Department.

The accident occurred on Route 114 near River Road. According to the sheriff’s office, the motorcyclists were in a group traveling westbound when they came upon a van that had stopped in traffic in the westbound lane waiting to turn left. Investigators said it appears the van was making a proper turn. In an attempt to avoid hitting the van, the motorcyclists skidded and lost control of their bikes.

Joseph Kashinsky, who was airlifted to Maine Medical Center in Portland with head trauma, was being treated in an observation unit in fair condition Monday night.

Reports of the Cumberland sheriff’s deputy being taken to Maine Medical Center with a broken leg were unconfirmed. The other motorcyclists were treated at the scene for cuts and abrasions.

Two of the motorcyclists were reportedly wearing helmets.

The sheriff’s office is reconstructing the wreck, trying to determine if speed or alcohol were factors.
