PORTLAND (AP) – The Maine Legislature’s Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee is poised to review circumstances surrounding a prison hostage situation last week.

Sen. Bill Diamond, co-chairman of the panel, says lawmakers want answers to questions including what breakdown led to the situation, and how a prison inmate got a weapon.

The episode unfolded on July 1 at Maine State Prison when Michael Chasse took a prison worker and another inmate hostage using a makeshift knife. It ended more than seven hours later after a tactical squad broke through a plate-glass window to take Chasse back into custody. There were no serious injuries.

Chasse is serving time for attacking the brother of former Sen. William Cohen and for an escape during his trial. He isn’t scheduled for release until 2029.
