LEWISTON – Maine Family Federal Credit Union has announced the selection of three outstanding high school seniors who will receive $1,000 scholarships from the credit union to pursue their continuing education in the fall.
The Maurice Fontaine Sr. Scholarship has been awarded to Michele Fortier, daughter of Bernard and Pauline Fortier, Lewiston. She will pursue communication and film studies at Ithaca College in New York. Fortier has served as president of the National Honor Society and has received the National French Exam Award twice.
She has served as yearbook editor and cover designer, and participates in dance, the school swim team, the Girl Scouts, theater and the executive board. She shares her enthusiasm for art, photography, painting, chorus, music and piano through a variety of activities at Lewiston High School.
Fortier has been active with the Christian Leadership Institution and the Youth Leadership Project: Prevention of Hate Crimes. She works part-time for Flagship Cinemas, has volunteered to coach Special Olympic swimming and helps with community events for Holy Cross Church and the National Honor Society.
The Founders’ Scholarship has been awarded to Andrew Gwarjanski, son of Stephen and Lisa Gwarjanski, Poland. He will major in mechanical engineering at the University of Maine, Orono. Gwarjanski is a member of the National Honor Society and a recent recipient of the Western Maine Conference Citizenship Award, the Bishop Cote Award and the St. Michael’s College Book Award for Scholarship and Service.
He served as captain of the varsity hockey team at St. Dominic Regional High School and received the Maine Class A Hockey Association All-Academic Award for 2006-7.
Gwarjanski has helped to raise money for Project Hope, Project Graduation and the March of Dimes and participated in the American Legion’s Dirigo Boys State, the University of Maine Pulp and Paper Foundation Consider Engineering Program and St. Dom’s Mission to Mississippi. He works part-time at Fairlawn Golf Course.
The Roger Bissonnette Scholarship has been awarded to Emily Parent, daughter of Bruce and Marjorie Parent, Lewiston. She will pursue a bachelor of science degree in nursing at Boston College.
A recipient of the Cornell Book Award and an AP Scholar with Honors, Parent embraces academic and athletic activities equally. She is a member of the Lewiston High School varsity basketball and tennis teams. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Civil Rights Team and the French National Honor Society.
Parent has served as a volunteer for the Special Olympics basketball program and shares her positive outlook, encouraging others to achieve their goals. She has worked for the YWCA of Central Maine, the Lewiston Recreation Department and is working part-time for Grant’s Bakery.
Maine Family Federal Credit Union is a $94 million asset credit union with more than 18,000 members. Founded in 1938, the credit union has offices at 555 Sabattus St. and at 831 Minot Ave., Auburn. Its field of membership includes any person who lives, works, worships or attends school in Androscoggin County. All three student winners are residents of Androscoggin County.
