Henderson’s homer propels Auburn

AUBURN – Corey Henderson clouted a walk-off home run in the bottom of the sixth inning Tuesday as Auburn Suburban Little League 11-12 all-stars opened district tournament play with a 2-1 triumph over Dirigo all-stars.

Jeff Pulur of Dirigo drew a leadoff walk in the first that led to his team’s only run.

Henderson and Sean Soucy locked in a brilliant pitchers’ duel. Soucy worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing only one hit while striking out 13 and walking two.

Pulur entered the game with two out and a runner on base in the sixth, setting the stage for Henderson’s heroics.

Prior to his blast, Henderson pitched 5 1/3 innings of no-hit ball with 13 strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Brian Crane fanned both hitters he faced in the top of the sixth, ultimately completing the no-hitter.

Mike Hammond drew a walk in the sixth, forcing Soucy from the game due to pitch count restrictions. Henderson launched the first pitch deep to center field for the win.

Mickey Lawrence had a nice game behind the plate catching and was the only other hitter for Auburn.

Travis Lowell put down a nifty sacrifice bunt after Lawrence’s hit, only to see the runner stranded at third base.
