AUBURN – Joseph T. D’Amour, of Auburn, a former landlord and plumbing inspector, died unexpectedly July 8.
He was born in Lewiston, on Aug. 30, 1921, the son of Theophile and Ora D’Amour and was a lifelong resident of Androscoggin County.
After graduating from high school, he completed numerous classes at Central Maine Vocational College in Auburn. He served in the U.S. Navy Seabees for three years during World War II.
He owned and operated a chicken farm in West Minot for many years. He also operated a plumbing and heating business and drove buses for the Minot school for many years.
He was certified as a municipal plumbing inspector for the state of Maine. For the past 20 plus years. He had served as plumbing inspector for the city of Auburn, as well as for the town of Minot and surrounding areas.
He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 9787 in South Paris and a member of American Legion Post 0031 in Auburn. He was also a master Mason.
He enjoyed fishing, swimming, sailing, boating and spending summers at a camp he built on Tripp Lake. He also enjoyed traveling to foreign countries. He spoke French, Greek and Spanish and he interpreted American sign language.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, the former Cecile Liarakos; one son, John Russell D’Amour; daughter-in-law, Judy D’Amour; two grandchildren, Seth and Leah D’Amour of Gorham; and many nieces, nephews and in-laws.
He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Leo and Richard; and sisters, Jane Moore and Yvonne Smith.
